News: New distribution warehouse will be built at Manchester Airport City.
Amazon plans to create new jobs in Manchester after submitting a planning application for a new warehouse near its airport.
The US retail giant submitted the planning application to the city’s council to build the site at Manchester Airport City, an £800 million development near the airport announced by George Osborne in 2012.
According to Manchester Airport Group (MAG), the move should create 1500 local jobs.
Built near a DHL logistics hub at the development site, the deal will give Amazon access to their supply chain and 22 million customers within delivery distance of the airport.
Jonathan Haigh, MAG Property‘s director of development management and infrastructure, said: "Manchester Airport’s network of flights to destinations around the globe is one of the key things that makes Airport City attractive to businesses looking to relocate or set up new bases in the UK."
Sir Richard Leese, leader of Manchester City Council, said: "This development shows how attractive a location close to the aiport, with its extensive connections, is for occupiers who require a global reach."
