Half of companies currently run less than 20% of their business apps over the web.
43% of enterprises are planning to deliver the majority of new business applications over the internet next year, a new Akamai Technologies report revealed.
However, half of the companies reportedly run 20% or less of their business apps over the internet, the "Trends in Application Delivery Strategies" survey report added.
Akamai Web Experience Business Unit senior vice president and general manager Mike Afergan said: "Trends such as globalisation, telecommuting and mobility continue to drive the shift to Internet-delivered applications, and enterprises today are working hard to keep up.
"These survey results reinforce the demand for technology that provides greater security, reliability and speed for their business critical web applications.
"And as IT decision makers continue to look for ways to maximize the benefits of Internet application delivery, they want access to complementary solutions, such as those delivered by Akamai, that enable improved, global access to information and, ultimately, greater productivity."
87% of respondents noted security as their main concern, with 66% worried about performance and 45% concerned about reliability.
Websites and web applications constitute to 71% of apps currently running over the Internet, followed by email services (57%), content and collaboration sites and portals (51%), mobile or mobile web back-end apps (46%), and e-Learning (47%).
39% of respondents plan to invest in mobile or mobile web back-end apps, followed by websites or web applications (34%), content and collaboration sites and portals (34%), disaster recovery and backup services (26%), and customer relationship management (CRM) (28%).
The majority of businesses select employees who access business applications on a mobile device, with 22% noting that over half of their users access their business apps on a mobile device.
