Apple iPad dominates the media tablet market by shipping nearly 69% of worldwide volumes in second quarter of 2012
Worldwide media tablet shipments are expected to exceed 100 million units in 2012, with shipments reaching with Apple iPad dominating the market, according to a report by ABI Research.
According to the report, in April to June quarter of 2012, tablet shipment volume reached nearly 25 million, recording 36% rise compared to corresponding quarter last year and 77% rise year-over-year (YoY).

ABI Research Mobile Devices senior practice director Jeff Orr said: "Most impressive about Apple’s 17.0 million tablet shipments in 2Q’2012 was it nearly matched 2010 total worldwide shipments of 17.3 million for all vendors."
Growth in shipment of tablets during the period was also contributed by Samsung which accounted 8.1% of the total volume while ASUS accounted 4% while major decline was recorded by Research In Motion accounting 1% of market share.
According to the report, despite shipment restrictions on Samsung, the company maintained second-place during second quarter, followed by Amazon and ASUS.
In the second half of the year, new vendors and products are expected to enter the mobile device market including tablets from Google and Microsoft.
ABI expects the market share for Google’s Android OS for the second half of the year will be positively affected by Google’s Nexus 7 and negatively impacted by Microsoft’s Surface tablets.
Earlier this month, IDC report had also revealed the dominant position of Apple in the tablet market, with a colossal 68.2% marketshare, even though low cost rival tablets from Amazon sold 1.2 million units.
Apple’s key mobile rival Samsung accounted for just 9.6% of the market share with its Galaxy Tab range, despite 117.6% year over year increase in shipments to 2.4 million units.
