China and India register strong growth over last six months
Online shopping continues to be popular among the internet users in Asia Pacific with 89% of people participated in the survey saying that they had shopped online in the past 12 months, according to Visa.
According to the Visa eCommerce Consumer Monitor survey, the respondents from South Korea (97%), China and Japan (94% respectively) and Australia (89%) reported the most number of online shoppers of the six countries surveyed. In terms of quarter-on-quarter growth, compared to other respondents, those from China and India registered the strongest increase in online shopping over the last six months.
The most popular items to buy online in the past 12 months were clothes/shoes (55%), books (50%) and music downloads (49%). The top reasons for online shopping are to be able to shop anytime, compare prices and save money, find and compare products easily and search for bargains, Visa said.
The survey found that the number of people in Asia Pacific who have access to the internet grew by 22% during the period September 2008 to September 2009. China led the region with a 31% growth followed by Japan with 18% and India 17%. 39% of respondents in the region looked overseas for their online purchase.
Mohamad Hafidz, regional head of eCommerce for Asia Pacific at Visa, said: “With the rise of the middle classes in China and India and the increase in internet penetration, it is not surprising that more people from these two emerging markets are going online and exploring the benefits from all that eCommerce offers.
