To explain why underage users are able to access pornography on its phones
UK telecom regulator Ofcom has summoned BlackBerry maker Research In Motion to a summit meeting to explain why underage users are able to access pornography on its phones.
Children are able to download pornography through BlackBerry even though it has installed a filter because data flows through the BlackBerry’s own server. RIM had offered its own filtering tool to UK operators but only T-Mobile has deployed it.
An Ofcom spokesman said that it was brought to their attention that there was a problem. "It is to do with the way in which the BlackBerry operating system works. We are very concerned and want to get this resolved as quickly as possible," he added.
BlackBerry was in the centre of a debate in parliament over the use of its BBM service during the London riots.
According to the Telegraph, Tory MP for Devizes Claire Perry said she is alarmed and vowed to raise the issue with ministers.
