During the quarter the vendors from outside the Top 5 shipped 44.8% of the total shipment.
Worldwide mobile phone shipment grew 6% to 432.1 million units in the second quarter of 2013, compared to 407.7 million units sold in the corresponding period of 2012, according to a report from the International Data Corporation (IDC).
According to the report, the worldwide smartphone shipment reached 237.9 million units in the quarter, growing 52.3% against 156.2 million units shipped in the same period last year.
During the period, vendors outside the Top 5 list shipped 44.8% of the smartphones, up from 42.2% they shipped in the same quarter prior year.
IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker senior research analyst, Kevin Restivo, said that the smartphone market is still a rising tide that’s lifting many ships.
"Though Samsung and Apple are the dominant players, the market is as fragmented as ever," Restivo added.
IDC Mobile Phone team research manager, Ramon Llamas, said that the market opportunities exist at all levels, including the high end.
"While Samsung and Apple accounted for significant share of the overall market, they were not the only vendors active in the high end of the market, and recent device introductions and upcoming launches signal more vendors targeting this space," Llamas said.
"Comparisons will certainly be made to the flagship Galaxy and iPhone models, but clearly the competition refuses to be shut out altogether.
"Lower-priced smartphones continue to gain traction, but the key for vendors will be to keep prices low while still offering premium devices and services."
"We fully expect to see large-screen smartphones and other flagship devices establish a presence within the lower-priced smartphone segment as well."
For the second quarter Samsung led the market with 26.2% market share, followed by Nokia with 14.1% share, while Apple and LG occupied third and fourth positions with 7.2% and 3.7% shares respectively.
The vendors out side the Top 5 that registered double digit growth included Alcatel and Huawei, with their Android-based devices shipped to high-growth countries like China and India.
