News: The new flash drive can store as many 47 Full HD movies on your mobile.
Samsung has introduced a 256GB universal flash storage solution for high-end mobile devices.
According to the company, the new flash storage is much faster than SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) based SSDs (Solid State Drives) for PCs.
The company has started mass production of the embedded memory, which is based on Universal Flash Storage (UFS) 2.0 standard.
This memory module will go into next-generation mobile devices.
Samsung said that the new UFS memory satisfies the needs of ultra-fast speed, large data capacity and compact chip size in high-end smartphones.
The flash memory is based on the company’s own V-NAND flash memory chips and specially designed high-performance controller.
The UFS memory can handle up to 45,000 and 40,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) for random reading and writing.
This is over two times faster than the previous generation of UFS speeds that stand at 19,000 and 14,000 IOPS.
Sequential reading in the new flash storage uses 850MB/s of bandwidth for data transfer in two lanes.
This is also nearly twice as fast as the present SATA-based SSD in PCs.
Samsung Electronics, Memory Sales and Marketing, executive vice president, Joo Sun Choi said: "By providing high-density UFS memory that is nearly twice as fast as a SATA SSD for PCs, we will contribute to a paradigm shift within the mobile data storage market."
"We are determined to push the competitive edge in premium storage line-ups – OEM NVMe SSDs, external SSDs, and UFS – by moving aggressively to enhance performance and capacity in all three markets."
When compared with micro SD cards, the speeds can reach up to 260MB/s which is three times the present speed.
With this flash storage in next-generation mobiles, Ultra HD video playback, multitasking functionality on large screen mobile phones such as watching 4K movies in split screen, searching images, downloading videos, etc can be done effortlessly.
The flash memory itself can store as many 47 Full HD movies.
The flash memory can itself offer greater flexibility to handheld consumer electronics.
The company also says that with next generation mobile devices and smartphones offering support for USB 3.0, there can be a phenomenal increase in data transfer speeds, which can go up to 400MB/s.
