What can a ‘smart grid’ do for the industry?
Cisco intends to overlay digital communication onto the “smart grid” to digitally upgrade the electricity distribution system; it is about making communication equipments for electricity grid. The company claims that the “smart-grid” efforts would modernise the electricity industry very soon.
Other hi-tech companies such as IBM, Intel and various start-ups are also gearing up for a “smart-grid” push to capitalise on expected investments from utilities.
Cisco planned to enter the smart grid arena a year ago. The company has already tested how the routers and switches could more efficiently manage the flow of electricity and prevent outages in grid distribution.
Marie Hattar, vice president of marketing in Cisco’s Network Systems Solutions group stated that Cisco’s smart grid programme covers data centre equipment. But in other cases, such as home networks and smart-meter security, Cisco is developing new products, according to reports.
Cisco has already released EnergyWise software for managing energy use in office premises.
