The console is expected to go on sale in October for $130 (£84).
Nintendo has released a cheaper handheld console that plays 3DS games in 2D.
The Nintendo 2DS features dual screens, a camera, a gameplay controls and touchscreen similar to those in 3DS. It also offers wireless connectivity for online multiplayer gaming and access to eShop.
Nintendo America head Reggie Fils-Aime said the release of new console puts the company in a strong position ahead of the Christmas sales period.
"Nintendo has one of the strongest and most diverse video game lineups in our history," Reggie said.
"Today we’re making those unique Nintendo experiences more accessible and affordable. However you play and whatever you play, Nintendo has you covered."
The introduction of 2DS console comes after the game maker slashed the price of its Wii U console to $300 from $350 in the US market.
In May 2013, Electronic Arts (EA) stopped developing games for Nintendo’s Wii U console.
