Alcatel, the French telecommunications equipment maker, has won a contract with Russian company, SMARTS (Middle-Volga Interregional Association of Radio/Telecommunication Systems). Alcatel will deploy GSM networks for SMARTS in several regions of the Russian Federation.
The contract value exceeds $9 million and will increase SMARTS’ network coverage by over 150%.
This is not the first contract between the two companies: Alcatel previously supplied GSM networks for SMARTS in two cities, Samara and Togliatti. The new base stations will be installed in the Russian cities of Saratov and Volgograd, and the republics of Bashkortostan, Kalmyk and Tatarstan.
SMARTS, established in 1991, ranks among the top five Russian GSM operators. It provides GSM-900/1800 digital mobile communications services and serves more than 250,000 subscribers.
