Apple, Ericsson and Sun Microsystems have formed an alliance to create a standard format for delivering multimedia content to wireless devices, such as smartphones and PDAs.
The alliance combines Apple’s QuickTime video creation software, Sun’s content distribution software and hardware, and Ericsson’s mobile infrastructure and services expertise. It will be badged as the Ericsson Content Delivery Solution.
Streaming media is seen as one of the key revenue drivers for 3G mobile services, as many people are willing to pay to see video clips. Sports highlights and adult content are just two areas that mobile operators are investigating.
The cooperation with Apple and Sun ensures availability of multimedia content, thus bridging the media industry with the mobile community, said Ericsson senior vice president Torbjorn Nilsson.
