US communications company BellSouth Corp has revealed it is to cut approximately 6% of its workforce. The company blames the slow economy, pricing, competition concerns, and regulatory action for the job losses. The cuts follow BellSouth’s recent announcement that first quarter sales fell by 1.1%.
BellSouth is expected to cut between 4,000 and 5,000 jobs. The lay offs will come from both management and non-management positions. The company believes most of the job cuts will be voluntary redundancies.
BellSouth’s announcement follows a similar announcement last week of job cuts by fellow telecommunications company, SBC Communications.
