Bombardier Transportation has signed an alliance agreement with Kagiso Trust Investments and J&J Group, two of South Africa’s Black Economic Enterprise investment and industrial companies. The new alliance will be known as the Bombardier Transportation Africa Alliance.
Bombardier, as a member of the Bombela Concession Company, is designing and supplying all of the electrical and mechanical equipment, including the fleet of 96 Bombardier Electrostar vehicles, and is providing 15 years of maintenance services for the Gautrain.
Bombardier has been active in South Africa for many years and has provided rolling stock refurbishment and spare parts to the South African Rail Commuter Corporation (SARCC), Metrorail and Transnet Freight Rail. In 2006, Bombardier Transportation’s presence in the South African market gained significant recognition with the award of the Gautrain project to the Bombela Consortium by the Gauteng Provincial Government of South Africa.
Commenting on the Bombardier Transportation Africa Alliance, Raymond Betler, president of Bombardier Transportation, Total Transit Systems, said: Kagiso and the J&J Group are two of the country’s most respected BEE companies. This strategic alliance strengthens our commitment to build viable rail infrastructure, which will contribute to the socio-economic development of South Africa.
