BT Group’s chairman Sir Christopher Bland has stated the company is to focus on broadband for the foreseeable future, backtracking from earlier comments that suggested the company was to shortly enter the broadcasting business.
BT Group Chairman Sir Christopher Bland has restated the company is focused over the next year on broadband and defending its traditional phone business from further erosion. The comments poured cold water on speculation fuelled by Bland’s earlier comments that BT was to shortly branch out and deliver broadcast content over its network to compete with pay-tv operators such as BSkyB, ITV Digital, NTL, and Telewest.
We will not become a full vertically integrated media company, like BSkyB and News Corp, Bland told the FT. It is thought likely that BT will enter the broadcasting business eventually, but it might not happen for several years. Even then Bland suggested that BT would use its broadband network to deliver television services, but it would not directly enter the media and entertainment business.
