German mobile operator Deutsche Telekom has asked the government to change its 3G rules, so that holders of Germany’s 3G mobile licenses can keep them if they merge with each other.
The company, whose mobile unit T-Mobile has 66.9 million subscribers including 23.1 million in Germany, believes that only three networks in Germany can be profitable. Currently, there are six operators with 3G licenses. However, Vodafone and T-Mobile have 40% each of the market, leaving the other four fighting for scraps.
Kai-Uwe Ricke, CEO of T-Mobile, said, A market consolidation is inevitable. Politicians have to sort out the license rules before it happens.
