NTT DoCoMo, Japan’s largest mobile operator, has announced that it has started to build a test 4G mobile network. The network will offer download speeds of 100Mbps for downloads and 20Mbps for uploads.
The experimental network will help DoCoMo test its commercial 4G system, which it expects to launch in around 2010. The company will start evaluating technology for the new network this summer.
4G will be substantially faster than DoCoMo’s current 3G network, which offers transmission speeds that are generally below 1Mbps. However, there are substantial technological problems that the company will have to get round in building the network.
