NTT DoCoMo has broken the 40 million subscribers barrier. The announcement comes only 21 months after it surpassed 30 million subscribers in May 2000.
The company’s subscriber base grew by an average of 40,000 users per year for its first 10 years up until 1989. However, since 1993 it has seen annual growth explode to an average 4.3 million subscribers per year.
The company’s mobile Internet service, i-mode, has also contributed to DoCoMo’s success. The service has enjoyed incredible popularity, attracting 30 million users since its introduction in February 1999.
