Japanese operator DoCoMo is planning to develop 3G handsets with a dual browser capability that can display content from i-mode and WAP based service providers. The company began to study the possibilities of incorporating WAP 2.0 technologies into its FOMA handsets after the WAP Forum standardized specifications in January.
The new FOMA handsets will be compatible with the transmission protocol and the language specifications of WAP 2.0. DoCoMo plans to introduce the handsets by the end of the year.
The compatibility of the XHTML language used in WAP 2.0 and the HTML language means that i-mode content providers can utilize their knowledge to develop content for WAP 2.0 handsets.
