Ericsson Mobile Platforms has signed a licensing agreement with Finland’s Microcell. The agreement will give Microcell access to a range of GSM, GPRS and EDGE hardware and software platforms, which will enable it to develop mobile handsets based on Ericsson’s solutions.
The deal will strengthen both parties’ position in their markets. Partners are increasingly important as the mobile market is going through a trend similar to the PC industry. The market is shifting from comprising of a few complete mobile handset suppliers to a chain of specialized companies.
Ericsson is positioning itself as one of the leading suppliers of core handset technology. Its portfolio of 2.5G and 3G intellectual property rights is the largest in the world; Ericsson Mobile Platforms is now offering this to the market.
