Sweden’s Telia and Finland’s Sonera have received conditional approval to merge from the European Commission. The condition is that Telia sells its mobile operations, dealership chain and wireless LAN business in Finland. The telecoms company will also have to provide a national roaming contract to the buyer if it is required.
The new company will also have to make its regulated wholesale fixed and mobile network products and its international GSM roaming in Sweden and Finland available to telecoms operators in these markets.
The condition requires that access be on a non-discriminatory basis for a period of three years. The two companies have stated that they are happy with the fast approval and that the commitments are reasonable.
