Glossary of Terms: ‘Buffer Overrun Vulnerability’

Buffer Overrun Vulnerability: noun 1) what one is faced with when one stops one’s car a little too deep inside an automatic car wash.

2) a vulnerability of the buffer overrun sort, as in “A buffer overrun vulnerability exists in the processing of JPEG image formats that could allow remote code execution on an affected system. Any program that processes JPEG images on the affected systems could be vulnerable,” Microsoft said (ComputerWire, Sep 15 2004). Apparently applying a patch from Microsoft can cure the buffer overrun vulnerability in question.
