Number porting feature added on users’ demand
Google Voice users can now use their existing mobile or home phone number to make online calls, the search engine said.
The company added the number porting feature for user’s phone numbers seven months after it opened the offering for PCs.
In a company post, Google software engineer Robert Dong said most users of its voice calling service have asked for using its features such as voicemail transcription, free text messaging and international calling with an existing phone number.
The new feature was an effort to fulfil such a need, Dong added in the post.
Users need to visit Settings menu, select "Change/Port" under the Phones tab to begin the phone number porting process, which costs $20 through Google Checkout and takes about 24 hours.
