A Greek judge has ruled the country’s new law, which bans gaming “unconstitutional”. He was speaking after throwing out the first case brought under the law.
The new legislation was put forward, to fight against illegal gambling and slot machine addiction within the country. However, according to Kathimerini, a Greek paper, the law has been worded to include gaming on all electric, electro-mechanical and electronic products.
Playing games on mobile phones or portable consoles like Game Boys in public could result in fines of up to E0.075 million, or up to 12 months imprisonment, if convicted.
The government now faces protests from the Greek gaming community, with an online petition already launched by one site, www.gameland.gr.
