Supply chain technology provider Intermec has partnered with Cisco to provide interoperability between its rugged handheld computers and Cisco’s wireless networking systems.
The combination provides a mobile business solution for enterprise customers, allowing real time connection between mobile workforce and business applications. The CN3 works simultaneously on multiple communications platforms for voice and data such as wireless WAN voice and data service, including 3G EV-DO or EDGE and CDMA radios.
The new Cisco unified communications converge multiple voice and data streams into a single IP platform, while the Cisco unified wireless network offers in-building coverage. According to Intermec, this combination offers productivity, optimized workflow and lowered operating costs by eliminating multiple communications devices.
Mobile workers today must use multiple devices to conduct business, depending on whether they are in a cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, which significantly adds to operational costs and inefficiencies, said Ben Gibson, director of mobility solutions at Cisco. The Intermec rugged CN3 mobile computer provides consistent, highly secure communications with a single device regardless of the work environment and access technology.
Intermec received certifications for Cisco compatible extensions program, including Cisco unified wireless network and Cisco unified communications solutions, in November 2007. Nokia has already received the certification from Cisco, after which it released Nokia Intellisync Call Connect for Cisco version 1.1 on Nokia E-series devices. The solution allows mobile users to continue an active conversation as they transition from campus wireless local area networks (WLANs) to cellular networks.
