Microsoft [MSFT] is expanding its research operation in China, with the creation of a new division that will have a particular focus on human/computer interaction.
The launch of the Advanced Technology Center (ATC) at Microsoft Research Asia comes as the Beijing-based operation celebrates its fifth year.
The ATC will take on 80 engineers and developers in its first year alone.
User interface issues are particularly key to the uptake of information technologies in Asia, given issues such as the complexity of some alphabets in the region.
Other prime areas for the ATC will be graphics and multimedia, wireless and networking, and information processing.
