The US Federal Trade Commission has filed charges against two companies for making false claims to promote radiation shields for mobile phones. The FTC says it does not know of any product proven to reduce mobile phone radiation exposure.
According to the FTC, shields that only block the earpiece do not work, since the whole phone emits radiation. In any case, shields may obstruct a phone’s signal, causing it to produce still more radiation to improve signal quality.
There is no scientific evidence that their products work as they claim, says Howard Beales, FTC consumer protection director. These companies are using a shield of misrepresentation to block consumers from the facts.
