Motorola has said that it intends to be the number one mobile network and handset supplier in China this year. Its aim will require it to beat its rivals Nokia and Ericsson, which are also present in this vast market.
Motorola currently shares the number one position in the Chinese phone market with Nokia, with revenues of $4.9 billion last year. In the network equipment market Motorola claims second place, with Ericsson taking the lead.
China has 166 million mobile users and is already the largest mobile telecoms market in the world. Motorola expects the number of users in China to hit 400 million within five years. It also believes that their handsets will be used to send more data messages rather than voice messages.
