Despite Nokia’s dominance in mobile handsets, its fellow Scandinavian Ericsson has generally been ahead of it in infrastructure. However, in the 3G equipment world Nokia has been winning almost as many infrastructure contracts as Ericsson.
According to figures published by the W-CDMA Association, Ericsson received 31% of the 108 contracts awarded last year. Nokia won just slightly less than Ericsson, coming in second place at 28%.
The two Nordic firms were competing against 60 other operators. It’s worth sounding a note of caution, however. The values of these contracts have not all been published, so it isn’t clear exactly how much revenue this represents.
