Open Text Corp, a Canadian supplier of collaborative knowledge management (KM) software solutions, continues to ally with local channel partners to extend the market reach of its flagship Livelink platform. The latest market targeted is greater China. Open Text has reached an agreement with CDC Software, the software unit of chinadot.com Corp, to deliver Livelink solutions throughout the greater region. The partnership will also target Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea.
Hong Kong based CDC will provide local market expertise and aims to ‘inside sell’ Livelink into its 400 strong customer base; with over 1,000 installations spread across the region. Major clients include multinationals such as Microsoft (China), AC Neilsen and Shangri La Hotels as well as large domestic companies such as Shenzhen Airlines and Carrefour.
Research firm IDC estimates (rather optimistically) that the Asia-Pacific market for KM services will be worth about $1.9bn by 2005, with a CAGR on services spending of 125% over the next three years. Despite trade barriers coming down and increased global competition, the cultural barriers for Asian companies implementing collaborative systems and knowledge sharing technologies should not be underestimated; this is one reason why KM has yet to fully take off as a business practice among enterprises in the region.
