Orange has denied a report that it is in talks with US operators over the export of its brand name. France Telecom’s mobile unit says it will focus on European markets – especially Germany – for the time being.
Orange was responding to a report in French newspaper Les Echos, which alleged that the company would put forward a proposal to its board in June to take the brand to the US. It also suggested that a US Orange service could launch by the end of 2002.
The joint venture speculation concerned the US’ two independent GSM operators: Cingular and Sprint PCS. Out of the country’s other two GSM providers, VoiceStream is owned by Orange’s archrival Deutsche Telekom, while AT&T Wireless is allied with NTT DoCoMo.
