Orange will give its French subscribers unlimited access on its GPRS mobile Internet service for just E6 per month. The flat-fee charge will apply when the network launches on May 30, and is in addition to voice call charges. Orange hopes to attract millions of subscribers to the web service before its competitors catch up.
However, the GPRS network runs the risk of disappointing users if it is over-marketed. The technology is still not powerful enough to allow rapid sending of photos, the watching of video files, or the opening of email attachments.
On the other hand, subscribers will have unlimited access to online news, weather, sport and entertainment listings. The reading of emails will also be free, although a charge will be made for each email sent. Orange intends to roll the same offer out across Europe by September.
