France Telecom’s Orange unit has teamed up with Alcatel in Romania. Alcatel has already installed a UMTS network across Bucharest, and the two companies will now work to test 3G services.
The work by the two companies will be pioneering for Eastern Europe. Tests on the Alcatel network began by sending mobile multimedia data. So far, the results have been positive; the network has achieved speeds fast enough to reach UMTS standards.
Once up and running, the network will be able to support high-speed data transfer to allow for web browsing, video streaming and downloading, as well as the usual voice communication.
