Palm, the US based manufacturer of handheld computer hardware, has said that it is to release a new operating system for its handheld computing devices. The new OS 5 operating system is run on ARM microprocessors and offers a number of advanced features that rival those currently used on Microsoft’s Pocket PC’s.
OS 5 is said to be faster and more secure than existing operating systems. It includes a variety of features such as the accommodation of richer audio and graphics, as well as play back and recording functions for digital audio. The operating system also includes expanded built in support for wireless networking.
Palm has already begun to distribute OS 5 to developers and the first devices using the operating system are expected to be unveiled this summer.
