According to new research by the UK government, electromagnetic emissions from mobile phone masts near schools may be insignificant. The levels recorded on the 100 masts tested were far lower than the official guidelines.
Some of the figures were thousands of times lower than the recommended limits, set by the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. However, the UK government has not used this evidence to claim that mobile phone masts are safe, instead telling the press it was not in a position to say anything either way.
Instead, the government will continue the program, examining 100 more masts this year. It will also continue separate research into the potential dangers of mobile handsets.
