Samsung Electronics has announced it has developed a new LCD driver IC for mobile phones that can reproduce of up to 65,000 colors on a liquid crystal display. Displays currently used in handsets are able to deliver only 256 colors.
The new driver has both a common driver and segment driver integrated into the same chip, which makes it unlike any other device currently available on the market. The device can be used for 256 or 4,096 colors in addition to the full 65,000-color capability depending on requirements.
The Korean chip manufacturer claims that the driver IC can improve the performance of mobile-phone central processing units (CPUs) by using multiple-line selection (MLS) to transmit data from more than one data line at a time. The MLS feature is able to quadruple processing speeds while also reducing power consumption by around 60%.
Samsung plans to commence production of the color LCD driver in July. However, he company is already setting itself high targets, it is aiming to capture about 15% of the overall market for LCD drivers by 2003.
