Singapore Telecom is calling on the Singapore government to abandon the requirement for island-wide 3G mobile coverage by the end of 2004.
According to SingTel Mobile’s CEO Lucas Chow, it is not clear whether demand will be strong enough in outlying areas to justify the cost of developing an island-wide network. The operator plans to introduce 3G services in 2003, which will target professionals in the country’s central business district.
SingTel also plans to increase sales by combining Internet and mobile services. It expects to sell more packaging services that offer facilities such as single email address for sending messages via phone or computer.
