Russian mobile operator North-West GSM is to offer customers the opportunity to earn 2 cents for receiving text messages. Its St Petersburg customers can make the money for receiving SMS message advertisements through their cellular phones.
Subscribers signing up will be sent three to ten SMS advertisements a day. In return, North-West will pay each receiver 2.4 cents per advertisement. Subscribers could make up to $7 per month, enough to cover the monthly subscription fee for direct numbers. However, the service will start only when 10,000 subscribers have signed up.
The new service follows the entry of a competitor into St Petersburg. Mobile TeleSystem, Russian’s largest operator, entered the city last year, although the second largest operator, Vimpelcom, remains absent. The move could help North-West retain and win customers in the face of competition.
