According to the GSM Association, the number of SMS text messages sent over Q1 2002 is up by 50% on the same period in 2001. Over the last year, an extra 167 million customers have started to use SMS.
The GSMA estimates that the total number of SMS messages sent over 2002 could reach 360 billion. The largest untapped SMS market is the US, where subscriber numbers are on the up and increasingly cross-network SMS is becoming available.
On top of this good news, the GSMA has also released figures showing the number of GSM customers worldwide has also risen rapidly. It looks set to hit three quarters of a billion anytime soon.
