Sony Ericsson has launched its first own-brand mobile handsets. The joint venture’s devices feature color screens and multimedia messaging services (MMS); although hardly revolutionary, they certainly seem to have potential.
Company president Katsumi Ihara also said the unit was in talks with Sony’s gaming unit PlayStation over developing mobile applications. This may prove interesting: the industry expects mobile gaming will be a major driver behind the uptake of advanced wireless services, and the PlayStation is a strong product with a strong brand.
Mr Ihara has also announced deals with Sony’s music and cinema divisions, allowing customers to download pictures and ringtones from popular Sony songs and movies. These deals could also prove an interesting base for larger content deals.
