Mobile handset maker Sony Ericsson has announced content partnerships with games publishers iFone and Synergenix. Sony Ericsson customers will be able to download some of the providers’ games for free from the operator’s website.
Sony Ericsson will also link customers to the games firms’ sites, where they will be able to download more games for a fee. It could be a lucrative deal: Datamonitor expects mobile gaming revenues will hit $17.5 billion by 2006.
iFone may be at a particular advantage, since it owns the back catalog of 1980s gaming giant Atari. Not only do these have ‘retro appeal’, but they are also well-suited to the limited graphics capabilities of mobile handsets.
