A competition has been launched in Asia to find a killer app for the mobile industry. The Asia Java Mobile Challenge is being led by SingTel, Sun Microsystems and SingTel Optus. Other SingTel partners such AIS, Bharti, Globe Telecom and Telkomsel as are also involved with the initiative.
The idea of the contest is to encourage developers to find applications on the Java 2 Platform for wireless handsets. The winners of the competition will receive commercial contracts with six of the regional operators organizing the event. The prize is likely to attract developers worldwide.
There have been no strict guidelines placed regarding the type of content. SingTel and the others involved hope that this will promote creativity that could lead to the creation of a truly killer app.
Twenty finalists will be chosen from all of the entries and tested by subscribers of the organizing companies. The contest is on for two months, ending August 16, 2002.
