New Zealand mobile operator Telstra Clear has sold 5MHz of 3G spectrum to Vodafone. The company was forced to sell the spectrum after TelstraSaturn’s December merger with CLEAR Communications left it with 20MHz, when the legal maximum is 15MHz.
The deal gets Telstra Clear out of a tight spot, since the 90-day deadline set by the government for selling the spectrum is about to expire. Many in the industry believe that Vodafone will have used the time limit to get a better price.
New Zealand’s government plans to sell another 5MHz of 3G spectrum later this year.
