To concentrate on production of flash memory chips
Toshiba is in talks with multiple chip makers including GlobalFoundries to outsource production of system large scale integration (LSI) chips.
According to reports, the two companies are in the final stages of negotiations.
A Toshiba spokesman said the company was talking to several companies and GlobalFoundries and Samsung were among them.
Outsourcing in system LSI chips is expected to help Toshiba concentrate its resources on flash memory chips, which are used in smartphones and tablet computers.
Reports say while GlobalFoundries is expected to manufacture semiconductors using the latest technologies, Samsung is likely to handle low-cost fabrication of Toshiba’s mainline image-processing chips.
Toshiba said last month that it had reached a basic accord to sell its system LSI chip facilities in Nagasaki Prefecture, western Japan, to Sony.
