Linux-based application platform vendor Trolltech expects a higher growth rate in the second half than the first six months but said growth for the full year may fall below the approximately 40% recorded for each of the three previous years.
In the second quarter to June 30, the Oslo, Norway company cut its net NOK 14m ($2.4m) to NOK 7.7m ($l1.3m) on revenue up 24.2% at NOK 51.7m (8.7m).
The company’s Qtopia platform is used by Motorola, which plans to make 60% of its handset portfolio based on Linux in the next few years. Under its agreement with Motorola, Trolltech will receive royalty payments per mobile phone shipped, and revenue in any given quarter will be based on Motorola s shipments in the previous quarter.
Trolltech said it is strengthening its efforts toward several other tier-1 mobile phone vendors. Although Apple’s iPhone is not based on Qtopia, Trolltech expects it to accelerate the demand for advanced software from other phone vendors and this may provide a strong driver for Qtopia.
The company’s Qt development tool, which enables programmers to deploy their applications on all major desktop platforms based on a single source code base, is now available for Java, and it said it is working to expand the cross-platform further through development of Windows CE and Windows Mobile versions.
