Almost half of the UK’s pay-as-you go mobile phone customers are paying too much. The consumer magazine Which? has found that over 10 million of the UK’s 22 million prepay customers are losing out.
It is claimed that customers could save an average of GBP80 a year by shopping around. Customers are unaware of the tariff they are on and are reluctant to search for a better deal. Some customers could save even more – as much as GBP100 a year – by switching to a contract.
The UK mobile market has 46 million mobile subscribers and it is worth around GBP11 billion a year. However, Which? says that there is a fundamental lack of competition in the UK market, which is dominated by four main operators.
