VeriSign Inc said last week it has signed up Affinity Internet Inc and Interland Inc, two web hosting providers for the US small and medium sized enterprise market, to use its Shared Hosting Security Service.
SHSS addresses the problem that to execute SSL transactions small sites need a digital certificate for their web server, but share that server with other sites in other domains, all using a cert registered to the hosting provider.
The service allows all sites on a server to be authenticated and to provide a VeriSign security seal to show they have been recognized as a legitimate business. The company will sell its own-brand and Thawte-brand certs via the two ISPs.
The target market of small e-businesses is the one where VeriSign’s rivals, notably GeoTrust Inc, say they have been having the most traction due to simpler purchasing systems that rely less on manual authentication.
