What is a keylogger?

A keylogger refers to keystroke logging and describes the recording, or logging, of the keys struck on a keyboard. Often keyloggers are used covertly so that the person using the keyboard is unaware that what they type is being recorded.

There are both software and hardware based keyloggers. Businesses may use keyloggers in order to monitor network usage, while hackers may use keyloggers on public computers in order to steal passwords and other personal data.
