What is a MAC address?

MAC stands for media access control, with a MAC Address used to describe a unique identifier of a computer. Every computer or device on a network has a unique identifier, with that number used to send data to other computers on a network.

While an IP address is a unique number for computers using the Internet Protocol for communication, the MAC address is the unique number assigned to the computer’s hardware.
