What is a matrix?

In computer science and mathematics, a matrix (plural ‘matrices’) is a set of numbers laid out in rows and columns.

Numbers in a matrix may represent data or mathematical equations. They are used as a way of providing quick approximations of more complicated calculations.

They were originally devised as a way of describing systems of linear equations.

In applications such as image processing and genetic analysis, computers may multiply matrices in order to solve systems of linear equations.
