What is a network?

In technology, a network refers to a series of points or nodes that are interconnected by communication paths.

Networks are able to connect with other networks and subnetworks and the most general configurations are bus, star, token ring, and mesh.

Networks can also be identified by characteristics of distance, for example a local area network (LAN), metropolitan area networks (MANs), and wide area networks (WANs).

In addition to this characteristic a network can be characterised by the type of data transmission technology that is in use on it.
